Introduction.......... Speed Skating

Several new sports are being introduced to Nipawin.  The 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games will schedule many different sporting events; many familiar sports and some unfamiliar sports.  Speed Skating is one of the new sports.  Under the capable supervision of Alan Jones and Betty Blue, Nipawin now has an active Speed Skating Club.   The club has 14 members, both boys and girls ages nine through thirteen.   Anyone interested in learning more about the sport of speed skating or would like to join the organization, phone the Games office.  The coaches are very excited about the prospect of athletes from Nipawin qualifying for this new sporting event in the ‘98 Winter Games.   The speed skating events at the Saskatchewan Winter Games will offer competitions for regular and Special Olympic participants.

Cuddleup '98 Volunteer Profile

The first volunteer to be profiled in our inaugural newsletter hails from the Narrow Hills Provincial Park near Lower Fishing Lake.  He spent the last several winters just lying around. In April of 1996, he decided that he was tired of spending his winters alone and set out to find a new home.  On his travels he heard a rumor about a great place called Nipawin; the town at the end of the rainbow. He set out to find this wonderful place.  Wilbur-r-r-r  arrived in Nipawin on April 22, 1996, to find the town in a state of great commotion and excitement.   Nipawin had been chosen to host the 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games, February 22-28, 1998.

Wilbur-r-r-r "See" Winter saw the opportunity to meet some great people so he signed up as a volunteer for the ‘98 Winter Games; the Games committee asked him to become the official mascot.  Wilbur-r-r-r  agreed and he has become the cuddliest volunteer on the team.  Wilbur-r-r-r is making several guest appearances around the region promoting the 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games and inviting everyone to find their "Gold" at the end of the rainbow.  When Wilbur-r-r-r   is not busy with official business, he likes to participate in winter activities, especially sliding on the ice and snow.  His favourite winter pastime is of course, ice fishing!  Wilburr-r-r-r  would love to visit your community to spread the excitement of the 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games.  To schedule a date with Wilbur-r-r-r, please call the Games office at (306) 862-1998.

Did You Know That........

The slogan "at the end of the rainbow" originated from a song that was written in the mid 1980’s for the Nipawin Chamber of Commerce.  The song was written and performed by Stan Garchinski, from Northeast Saskatchewan.
