Song introduced at Sell-a-Thon

The Nipawin Chamber of Commerce chose the 1998 Winter Games as it’s theme for this year’s Sell-a- Thon events.   Business staffs were encouraged to dress in sports attire to represent different events in the Games.

The Games committee took part in some of the scheduled events.   A team of five including Wilbur-r-r-r took part in the bed races, as well Wilbur-r-r-r spent some time on the streets meeting people and promoting the upcoming games.

Saturday evening the publicity committee took advantage of the large crowd gathered at the Nipawin Evergreen Curling Rink to introduce the 1998 Winter Games song and video.   The song and video were well received by the 1000 plus crowd in attendance.   The screening of the video was made possible by the loan of projection equipment from L.P. Miller School and the expertise of Richard Karras, a student at L.P. Miller School.

Province wide release of 1998 Winter Games Song

October 20, 1997, a small contigent representing the Games committee travelled to Melfort to help host the morning show on CJVR radio and to introduce the Winter Games song to the public.   Jim Chute co-writer of the song was one of those in attendance.   Jim explained the history behind the song, the participants and it’s production.   The song has been released to most radio stations across the province and it is hoped that the stations will use every opportunity to play the Games song.

BBS - CKBI-TV Airs Video

The 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games song was not the only production to hit the air waves on October 20, the Games video was released by Don Mitchell on his Eye on Saskatchewan show.   The video was produced by the BBS Prince Albert studio.   BBS’s Craig McGowan and Gord Barnett did a great job on the video, utilizing the Games song, footage of Wilbur-r-r-r and footage from previous Games.   Be sure to watch for someone from your zone in the video!

Mission Orientation a Success

The weekend of October 24 & 25 was very exciting and busy time in Nipawin.   The 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games committee welcomed the Mission Staffs from all eight zones to Nipawin.

A hospitality room was arranged for the guests on Friday night and then on Saturday it was down to work for the visitors.   All Games committees made presentations to the Mission staffs regarding each committee’s plans and programs for the actual Games.   The purpose of this weekend is to familiarize the Mission staff with the services that will be available for their athletes and staffs during the Games.   The visitors were also taken on tour of Nipawin and the various Games venues.

Provincial Playdowns

Three provincial playdowns have been held in Nipawin over the past few weeks.   Competitors saw first hand the venues for the 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games and a chance to become familiar with competition sites.  The bowling playdowns were held at A. J. Bowl and organizers report some excellent scores among the participants.   Volleyball playdowns were held at L.P. Miller School and the Nipawin Bible Institute; competition was strong among the attending teams.   The final playdown held was Handgun Air Pistol, local as well as out of town athletes competed for a spot on the Zone 8 team.   Handgun Air Pistol competition is being held at the Nipawin Fish and Wildlife Hall.

Introducing.............. Handgun Air Pistol

Handgun is another sport that is new to Nipawin.   Although there is no organized club as of yet in Nipawin, local athletes made a very good showing at the provincial playdowns held here recently.   Hand gun competition is held on a 10 metre range and each competitor fires one shot at each target. The men have 1:45 to fire 60 rounds and women have 1:15 to fire 40 rounds.  Each zone will be represented by two teams, a man and woman on each team.   The athletes will range in age from 13 to 16 years of age.   The hand gun competition will be held in the Nipawin Fish and Wildlife Hall at the Nipawin Regional Park, February 25, 26, 27 and 28, 1998.

Wilbur-r-r-r

It has been almost a year since Wilbur-r-r-r was introduced to the community of Nipawin as the official mascot for the 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games.   He has had a busy year meeting people and attending both large events such as a Roughrider football game and Telemiracle, to smaller events in Nipawin and surrounding communities.   One of his favorite things to do has been to visit the school classrooms.   He has been enthusiastically received by children and adults alike and gathers a crowd wherever he appears.   He loves his job and you can certainly tell.

For the month of December, Wilbur-r-r-r has added a festive Santa Claus hat to his attire.   He has been invited to attend three Christmas parades, several parties, Santa Claus days, zone finals and news conferences.   He will be taking a few days off over Christmas to rest and get ready for January and February events.   He is scheduled for more zone finals, zone pep rallys and of course, the "Games" themselves.
