Pep Rally Coming Up at L.P. Miller School
The Volunteer committee along with the staff of L.P. Miller are planning a school pep rally January 29, 1998 to create excitement and recruit volunteers for the 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games. The volunteer recruitment will probably be set up as a competition between the schools four houses. Some entertainment and presentations are scheduled and it is hoped too, that the students will take advantage of this opportunity to become involved in the Games.
Volunteers
Volunteers are still needed in most areas of the Games operations. The time has come for anyone from Nipawin and area who intend to volunteer for the Games to come forward and register . Lots of fun and interesting jobs are still available. Sign-up now and assure that these are the greatest Games ever and show the rest of the Province our Nipawin pride.
The Food Service committee has the greatest need of volunteers at this time. If you would be interested in helping in this area, please call the Games office now to register as a volunteer.
The Security committee is also seeking help, this committee is responsible for securing the Games villages. If you would be interested in a position with this committee call Dennis Botterill at 862-5813 or the Games office at 862-1998.
Cultural Activities an Integral Part of the Games
The Cultural component of the Saskatchewan Winter Games is a relatively new aspect of the Games. The organizing committee of the 1988 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Melfort was the first to incorporate a full scale schedule of cultural events into their Games.
The organization and implementation of the Saskatchewan Games requires a commitment by an entire community. The Cultural committee and its scheduled events provide and opportunity for people not ordinarily involved in sports to feel a part of the Games experience by becoming involved in the planning of or participating in the Cultural events.
Nipawin and area residents as well as visitors to the Games are urged to explore the many Cultural displays and activities that are planned for the Games week.
Art Contest
The 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games Cultural Committee for Youth is sponsoring an art contest for Nipawin students. Students are urged to use the Games or a Games sport as their theme. The contest is being run through the Nipawin schools, contact your teacher for more information. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in six age groups. The deadline for entries is January 31, 1998.
Winter Games Murals on Display
A series of murals depicting all the Games events are now on display in downtown Nipawin. The murals are sponsored by the Visual Arts component of the 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games Cultural Committee. The murals were painted by local artists and they have done an excellent job of creating Games awareness and at the same time brighten the downtown area.
Ethnic Displays Part of Games Festivities
Several Nipawin business windows will be housing ethnic displays from January 15 until after the Games. The displays are being set up as a part of the 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games Cultural Committees contribution to the Games. It is hoped that the displays will create and awareness and appreciation for the many cultures that make up this great Province. The committee is still looking for costumes to display, if you would be willing to lend your costume for this purpose contact Kathy Palidwar at 862-3574. The Cultural Committee is also hoping that people attending Cultural events during the Games will dress in ethnic costume if possible.
Cultural Events Prior to Winter Games
There will be lots of activity in Nipawin prior to the Winter Games, as well as the Art Contest, Ethnic displays and the murals, the Cultural committee has also planned a snow sculpture contest for February 14. The contest will be held in Central Park in conjunction with Family Fun Day ( more details in next issue ). The committee also has a raffle underway, the top prize being a handmade quilt depicting the Winter Games.
Daily Cultural Events During the Winter Games
The 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games Cultural Committee has a varied and interesting line-up events to entertain visitors to the Winter Games.
Several events will be staged everyday from Monday, February 23 to Friday, February 27. These events are a coffee house hosted by the Nipawin Seniors, the Roxy Theatre will present a free afternoon and evening movie, the Saskatchewan Arts Council display, Kids Corner, and Ethnic displays.
The week will offer other events such as sleigh rides, Cowboy Poets, Dessert Theatres, Dance groups, Artisans workshops and Gymnastic and Tae Kwon Do demonstrations. A special treat will be the well known group Street Nix performing Thursday for the general public and Friday at the athletes village. Friday has been designated as Youth Day with clowns, a penny carnival, and a music extravaganza. Also scheduled for Friday is a Flea Market at the Odd Fellows Hall.
The local Nipawin Museum Board is discussing plans to open the Nipawin museum for the Games week.

| Introducing ........ Judo | ![]() |
Another sport that is featured in 1998 Saskatchewan Winter Games that is not entirely new to Nipawin is Judo. Several years ago there was an active club here, but the lack of a coach in Nipawin has spelled the demise of organized Judo. It is hoped that the Games will rekindle an interest in the sport and that someone will step forward to fulfil the coaching duties.
The Judo competitions will take place at the Nipawin Evergreen Center, February 22, 23, 24 & 25. Zone 8 will be represented by a team of eight women and seven men, all in different weight categories. Be sure to check out the Judo competitions during the Games.
